The Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association promotes Quarter Horse Racing through the encouragement of breeding and ownership, as well as track development. Inaugurated in 1968, Quarter Horses have been competing in Alberta since 1957, beginning at the Millarville racetrack.
In the $35,115 (CAD) Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby (R) on Saturday at Century Mile, O Sawyer recorded his third career stakes win with a 1 1/2-length score under jockey Alejandro Angeles. Trained and owned by Wesley Oulton, who is also the breeder with Susen Oulton, O Sawyer clocked 330 yards in :17.014 for a 94 speed index.
A gelding by First Timber with earnings of $68,052, O Sawyer has a record of 13-3-3-2. His other two wins came in the AQHA Racing Challenge program in this year’s Adequan Century Mile Derby Challenge and last year’s John Deere Century Mile Juvenile Challenge.
Owner Jerry Stojan and trainer William Leech took second and third with offspring of Cerveza Corona. In second was the gelding Hot Cerveza, who ran third in last year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity. Third went to the filly Cervezas Fire, the winner of last year’s Sales Stakes Futurity.
At Century Mile on Saturday, the $58,649 (CAD) Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity (R) was won by Jerry Stojan’s homebred Bossy Cartel. Trained by William Leech and ridden by Alexander Marti, the Alberta-bred gelding by JD Wagon Boss drew clear to win by a length in :17.038 for a 93 speed index at 330 yards over a fast track.
This marked the second stakes win for Bossy Cartel, who took the $40,812 (CAD) Sales Stakes Futurity (R) at Century Mile on July 18. His record now stands at 4-3-0-1 with earnings of $37,546.
Rooters Wagon, also by JD Wagon Boss, took second for breeder and owner Glenn Willis. The gelding has finished second in all four of his career starts, including the Sales Stakes Futurity and the $49,228 (CAD) John Deere Century Mile Juvenile Challenge. Third went to The Friendly Fire, a gelding by Cerveza Corona also owned by Stojan and trained by Leech.
